This gallery features the Milky Way over a variety of landscapes, with foreground and background carefully balanced. A large portion of the images was captured over the sea, a comparatively rare motif in night photography, giving the sky a unique connection to the earth. While many night sky images depict the foreground only a silhouette, here boats, islands, and other landscape elements remain clearly visible without diminishing the impact of the sky. The photographs were taken under the dark skies in Indonesia – including North Sulawesi and the Mount Bromo volcano in Java – as well as on Tenerife at Mount Teide. All images were captured with wide-angle lenses as multi-row panoramas, to include as much of the visible Milky Way as possible. Detailed information about focal length, exposures, and locations is available for each image in the expanded image details.
