IC 4604 - Rho Ophiuchi Molecular Cloud

IC 4604 - Rho Ophiuchi Molecular Cloud

The image shows the Rho Ophiuchi molecular cloud, a large interstellar gas and dust complex in the constellation Ophiuchus, one of the nearest active star-forming regions. The Rho Ophiuchi cloud consists of dark nebulae, bright reflection nebulae, and areas of ionized gas.

Centrally visible is the reflection nebula IC 4604, illuminated by the star Rho Ophiuchi, which appears in blue tones. This color results from fine dust scattering the star’s light.

In the upper part of the image, the red supergiant Antares in the constellation Scorpius dominates. Its light produces a yellowish reflection nebula in its surroundings. Directly below this region is a red emission nebula, part of the molecular cloud, glowing due to ionized hydrogen gas.

Between Antares and the red emission nebula lies the globular cluster M4, which is much more distant but appears along the same line of sight.

To the right and slightly offset from the central nebula is the Blue Horsehead Nebula (IC 4592), another reflection nebula illuminated by nearby stars.

This scene illustrates the overlapping of different nebula types—blue reflection nebula around Rho Ophiuchi, yellow reflection around Antares, and red emission nebula—along with the projection of the distant globular cluster M4, highlighting the complex structure of one of the most colorful and active star-forming regions in our Milky Way.
