NGC 6946, also known as the Fireworks Galaxy, is a barred spiral galaxy located in the constellation Cepheus, close to the border with Cygnus. It lies at a distance of approximately 22 million light-years from Earth and has a diameter of about 40,000 light-years, making it somewhat smaller than the Milky Way.
The galaxy is famous for its exceptionally high rate of star formation and supernova activity. Over the past century, more than ten supernovae have been observed in NGC 6946, earning it its popular name. Numerous star-forming regions, glowing emission nebulae, and dark dust lanes are visible throughout its spiral arms, making it a particularly rich and detailed target for deep-sky astrophotography. Despite its relatively close distance, NGC 6946 is a challenging object to image due to its location near the galactic plane and the associated absorption by interstellar dust.
