Above the Indonesian island of Siladen, the Heart Nebula and its neighboring Soul Nebula slowly descend toward the horizon during the night. The glowing emission nebulae seem to set directly above the island, giving the scene a special symbolism — a “Heart for Siladen.” In the foreground lies the silhouette of Siladen, while behind it the island of Mantehage, part of Bunaken National Park, emerges from the darkness.
Captured from Gunung Tumpa, near the city of Manado, this image reveals the night sky in remarkable detail. Using an astro-modified camera, the delicate structures and characteristic red hues of the nebulae appear in particularly rich detail.
