
NGC 2403 is a spiral galaxy with a weak bar structure located in the constellation Camelopardalis and is a member of the M81 galaxy group. Its distance from Earth is estimated at about 10 to 12 million light-years. The galaxy has a diameter of roughly 70,000 light-years, making it somewhat smaller than our Milky Way.
NGC 2403 is characterized by its loosely wound, widely extended spiral arms containing numerous bright star-forming regions, H-alpha knots, young star clusters, and glowing emission nebulae. Based on its appearance, it is often described as a twin of the Triangulum Galaxy M33, although — apart from its apparent size in the sky — it is considerably less well known.
Capturing NGC 2403 in photographic detail requires long exposure times, especially under conditions of significant light pollution, such as those commonly encountered in regions like the Rhine-Main area.
