M101, also known as the Pinwheel Galaxy (NGC 5457), is a large spiral galaxy in the constellation Ursa Major. It lies about 20 to 23 million light-years from Earth and has a diameter of roughly 170,000 light-years, making it about twice the size of our Milky Way. Its nearly face-on orientation provides an exceptionally clear view of its extensive spiral structures.
Characteristic features of M101 are its open, loosely wound spiral arms, which are threaded with numerous bright star-forming regions, young star clusters, and glowing gas nebulae. The galaxy appears slightly asymmetrical: one side looks more pronounced and structured than the other. This uneven shape is likely the result of gravitational interactions with smaller companion galaxies.
The central region of M101 is relatively small and less dominant than in many other large spiral galaxies. Instead, the outward-reaching spiral arms define its appearance and give the galaxy its distinctive, wheel-like shape, which has earned it the name Pinwheel Galaxy.
