
NGC 5905 and NGC 5908 are two large spiral galaxies in the constellation Draco, located approximately 150 million light-years from Earth. Both have a size comparable to our own Milky Way and belong to the same galaxy group. The two systems are separated by only about 500,000 light-years and therefore represent a stage of a close galactic encounter that may provide us with a possible glimpse of the future evolution of the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy.
While NGC 5908 is seen almost exactly edge-on, hiding much of its spiral structure from view, NGC 5905 reveals its spiral arms more clearly. A striking feature is that NGC 5905 does not appear completely symmetrical: its outer regions and spiral arms seem distorted, suggesting that long-term gravitational interaction with its companion is already affecting its structure.
These two galaxies therefore capture a fascinating moment in cosmic evolution: two large spiral galaxies gravitationally influencing each other – a possible preview of the distant future of our own Milky Way, when it interacts with the Andromeda Galaxy.
In the surrounding field of the galaxy pair, several faint background galaxies also become visible. The two objects PGC 2502717 and PGC 54557 appear close to NGC 5908 and are likely located at a similar distance as the main galaxy pair. Another object, PGC 2504296, appears close to NGC 5905 but lies much farther in the background, at a distance of about 900 million light-years. These different distance layers demonstrate how many different depths of the universe can be captured simultaneously in a deep astronomical image.
